Twyn Accelerates Quality Control Processes at Gothaer Fahrzeugtechnik

Darmstadt / Gotha, Germany. Twyn, Visometry’s mobile AR platform for visual quality inspections, has been adopted by another industry leader: Gothaer Fahrzeugtechnik, a key manufacturer of welded structures for crane construction, now uses the tool to quickly inspect large components directly on the shop floor. The company also reports strong results with Twyn across a range of additional use cases — and highlights Visometry’s outstanding customer support.

Gothaer Fahrzeugtechnik (GFT) is a market and quality leader in welding complex tube and sheet-metal assemblies made from high-strength fine-grain structural steels. The company primarily serves customers in the mobile crane, special-purpose vehicle and general mechanical engineering industries. GFT, in turn, is a Visometry customer and uses Twyn to meet its strict internal and external quality standards even more effectively.

Despite their size, in some cases up to 14 meters long, crane components such as lattice booms, jib tips, and complete mast assemblies must be manufactured to exceptionally tight dimensional tolerances. To meet these high expectations, Gothaer Fahrzeugtechnik conducts regular inspections on all parts. Historically, the company relied exclusively on metrology systems. But as components grew in size over time, these systems made dimensional checks increasingly cumbersome and time-consuming. About three years ago, the company decided to evaluate how Visometry’s Twyn would streamline and accelerate this process.

Twyn is an augmented reality software solution that overlays a component’s CAD data onto the live camera image of a tablet in real time. This enables a straightforward as-planned vs. as-built comparison. The geometry of any product can be checked flexibly and with Twyn running on a tablet, inspections are no longer tied to specific locations or fixed schedules. This is particularly valuable for GFT, as they can now inspect large parts directly on the shop floor, eliminating the need for time-consuming transport to a dedicated metrology room. As a result, Gothaer Fahrzeugtechnik uses Twyn daily to inspect nearly all components, especially to verify that all add-on parts are present and mounted in the correct position.

If Twyn detects a deviation between the assembly and the CAD data, production staff correct the error on the spot. Alternatively, the part is remeasured using a metrology system to define further corrective actions. Thanks to this simplified, production-integrated workflow, Twyn helps GFT optimize and accelerate manufacturing processes while minimizing rework and returns. Additional Twyn applications at Gothaer Fahrzeugtechnik include quality gates between production stages as well as incoming and outgoing goods inspections. Twyn is also used to verify welding and tack-welding fixtures.

Gothaer Fahrzeugtechnik has been impressed by the collaboration with Visometry and has already deployed additional licenses across its production sites in Romania and Germany.
