ISMAR is somehow part of our roots and definitely a great place to learn about future XR developments. To us, unforgotten are the tracking challenges, benchmark for top SDK vendors and a run for “Who’s Best in Class?”. It’s been as thrilling as it sounds. Read on.
Like many summits, this year’s ISMAR 2020 has moved onlines – to VR, more particulalrly. It’s one of the longest lasting installments on Mixed- and Augmented Reality, yet relevant for both enterprises and research, as it perfectly combines these worlds. While AR has become mainstream, lots of the deep tech and core technology that drives modern AR experiences, is in ongoing development and will push digitalization and the way we work and entertain ourselves in the future.
Given our background, also VisionLib has many touchpoints with ISMAR. During our time at Fraunhofer IGD, it was the most relevant conference to publish to. But it soon moved to the most essential get-together in terms of benchmarking our marker-less tracking technologies during so called Tracking Challenge competitions. Looking back, it was an exciting time, where we could test our strength against no other than the likes of Metaio (ended up in ARKit) or Vuforia (at that time lead by Qualcomm).
The benchmark was always a thrilling thing. The tasks were difficult (find a particular 3D point fastly and with high precision, under tracking-adverse circumstances). The competition good. The field close together. And even though you were confident in having a chance to win by trusting your own abilities, the outcome was never entirely clear.
We’re proud we could win this challenge countless times with VisionLib, and particularly stood out in terms of accuracy and robustness. Attributes we keep high until today, because they are essential to put AR to work in industrial applications.
As a benchmark, the Challenge got so successful to be eventually hosted by Volkswagen, who around 2015 held one of the series’ last installments. Back then, we were once more able to present VisionLib’s capabilities and showed, why the lib comes with many advantages that outperform other techniques. As such, it’s surely save to say that Model Tracking is essence and future of industrial augmented reality.
From this early stage, VisionLib has now become a mature library for object tracking and is driving first-class industrial augmented reality, trusted by our customers worldwide.

At its heart, VisionLib is all about enabling developers and industries to augment objects via Model Tracking: toys, cars, aircrafts, machines, assembly parts – you name it. In short: it enables to extend objects in such a way to e.g. make work-life easier (by augmenting assembly instructions in the worker’s view field), and working with objects more digital and smarter (e.g. by augmenting real-time monitoring data of machine parts, like for a valve, right in a worker’s view).
Pinning data precisely on point is a key benefit of augmenting objects, as it puts this information into context and relation.
